I don't always go by the book as an editor.
My goal is to bring to your attention anything that might hinder a reader's engagement with the text. You may hire me for a copyedit, but if I spot an issue that falls under the heading of a content, line, or even a developmental edit, I'll make sure you know about it. You and your readers are important to me, so I choose flexibility over formality.
Short, sweet answer: everything below.
Long-winded answer: I'll check everything below (and more), using Microsoft Word's Track Changes and Comments features to address potential issues. (Here's how to view Tracked Changes, how to accept or reject each Tracked Change, and how to reply to Comments in a Word document.)
You, as the author, decide whether to accept or reject each suggested change.
Mechanics
✔️ Spelling
✔️ Punctuation
✔️ Hyphenation
✔️ Capitalization
✔️ Use of italics
✔️ Treatment of numbers
✔️ Dialogue mechanics
✔️ Consistency among headings, etc.
Language
✔️ Grammar
✔️ Usage
✔️ Diction
✔️ Flow
✔️ Patterns and variations
✔️ Authenticity (to ensure the language is accessible, accurate, respectful, and free of stereotypes)
Content
✔️ Consistency (in POV, tense, voice, and descriptive details)
✔️ Rhythm and pacing
✔️ Repetition (of wording, phrases, and events)
✔️ Dialogue (Is it believable? Effective?)
✔️ Any lingering problems, including developmental issues
Fact-checking
✔️ Fact-checking includes verifying the spelling of anything real (such as the names of people, places, and businesses), verifying locations, and checking quotations and trademark concerns.
✔️The degree of fact-checking usually depends on the genre and level of the edit, but basic fact-checking is always included.
Revisions
✔️ Edits will be shown through MS Word's Track Changes or addressed through the Comments feature.
✔️ The depth of revision relates to the edit type. Light copyedits include fewer changes, while heavy copyedits, line edits, and content edits involve deeper revisions.
✔️ Final decisions remain yours.
Style sheet
✔️ A style sheet is included with all copyedits.
✔️ The sheet will contain such information as important names, descriptive details, character relationships, locations, dates, spellings of certain words, and style choices.
✔️ Style sheets help ensure consistency and are a great reference!
